Curl Troy

Hopefully you all saw the segment about Curl Troy on Fox 45 on Thursday morning.  What a fun time we had with Dan, Meghan & Andrew!

I know some of you have caught the "curling bug" while at Riverscape (or trying to get into Riverscape).  

We have some dates and times for curling at Hobart.  We are looking at the four Saturday's (3, 10, 17, 24) in March from 5-7pm.  On Saturday, March 31 we have 1-3pm available.  We are hoping to do a mini-league for the 4 weeks at a total cost of $80 per person.  If you are not interested in or not able to do the whole four weeks, please let us know what you are interested in or able to do when you email to sign up and we will work with you to still get you curling.  We HAVE to have at least 16 people signed up for the 4 weeks.

The way that we will plan to handle registration is through email.  We will work with payments once you have emailed your interest.  We are also looking to have payment up front because Hobart is requesting that we pay them up front for our ice time. 

No experience is required to join this mini-league.  We will try to put everyone into groups that maximizes everyone's ability to learn and have fun.  If you have any questions, or wish to sign up for the mini-league please email Stephanie@CurlTroy.org.

We finished up our curling sessions with Riverscape for this winter.  We were able to expose 64 people to the wonderful world of curling!!  I know that there was a waiting list, and we are unsure if we will be able to gather that information from Riverscape.  If you were on that waiting list and would like to recieve email updates from Curl Troy please click on the tab for interested in curling and fill out the information.

We are still working on ice time with Hobart Arena in Troy, OH.  As soon as we know what will be available to us we will be sending out emails.  We will also be updating our website and our facebook page. 

Hello All!  Curl Troy is still alive and kicking!  Sorry that we haven't updated the website in a while, we will try to do a much better job of that.

On Thursday, January 26, 2012 and Thursday, February 2, 2012 we will be curling at Riverscape in Downtown Dayton, OH.  The sign-ups for this were done through their website.  We know that there was a waiting list and if you are on that waiting list Click Here to be added to our email list so we can let you know when you can curl with us.

We are currently in the process of finalizing our summer plans and may also have the oppritunity to pick up some options during the months of March and April.  It is looking as of now that our summer schedule will be very similiar to last summer with Sunday afternoon times over about eight weeks.  As for the Winter times this year we are currently looking for the best way to utilize both Tuesday evening and Sunday evening times to best meet the needs of the membership.

We are currently looking for some financial support to assist in making these options affordable.  If you or someone you know of may be able to donate to Curl Troy we are seeking funding for both stone purchases and for for subsidizing ice time.  Please feel free to contact me at bruce@curltroy.org for more information or to provide assistance.

We are currently negotiating winter ice time with Hobart Arena and should have signup information very soon.  We are currently looking at either Friday or Monday evening curling sessions.  The more we can prove interest in curling the more likely we will be able to procure good ice times fo get curling time in. 

We have acquired 2 sets to stones from various contacts within the Great Lakes Curling Association and will still be able to utilize a set from the Flying Dutchmen in Minster giving us three sheets.

We are also looking into some funding options to help us procure necessary equipment to give everyone the best culring experience we can.

Well I missed the weekly update last week, but unfortunately that means that not much really happened.  I received a packet of information from the United States Curling Association with alot of information which will be helpful in getting us started up.  Myself, along with a few of the other principals have been reading through the information and determining what information is useful as we go forward and what information we should keep for later down the road. 
 
This week I hope to hear back from the U.S. Curling association on aquiring stones though I believe that they are going to tell us that we are going to have to purchase the stones in the long run.  This is a major concern to me because I want the organization to be operating in the black in its first year of existance and going into a payment plan with USCA regardless of how good the plan is.  We do have some other options for stones and I'll be pursuing those as well but the time has come to move on stone aquisition if we want to be curling this summer.
 
Another project, and what I would consider the biggest project of the week is the creation of the articles of incorporation, and an initial draft of the by-laws.  We have to have articles of incorporation and become a non-profit organization in the State of Ohio in order to apply and become a 501 (C) 3 and be able to accept tax deductable donations.  This is also a major step in being able to aquire aid from the Troy Foundation and other charities as they are bound to only give to non-profit entities. 
 
I am also planning on meeting with the people from Hobart Arena to solidify their interest and get some figures on ice time.  How much ice time can we get and how much will it cost.  After this I can determine how much it is going to cost us individually to curl.

What an impressive response in the first 48 hours of the website going live and using only Facebook and word of mouth 12 people have signed up showing their interest in bringing curling to the Miami Valley.  Keep it up!  Last weeks major project was getting the site up and running, and though it is not very detailed it does serve the purpose of being able to share what is going on and collect information from those who are interested.
 
I received a response from the U.S. Curling Association and they are sending us information and working to help us get started.  They have some possibilities for the acquisition or borrowing of some stones to help us get started as well as some contacts that may be able to help us personally.  In the long run we are going to have to eventually come up with the money to buy our stones outright.  My hope is that we can borrow some stones from some clubs during their typical off season (yes curling has a typical season from September to April and many clubs close down in the Spring and Summer) to get us started over the summer so that we can get our feet on the ground.  The next big step this week will be trying to form a board of directors to start the organization.  I will be working to find out the requirements for starting an organization in Ohio and attempting to put a board together.  I would love any information or assistance from people who have experience in these areas or would like to step up to the table.  If you fall in that category please send me an email through the contact us form on the site or leave a comment with your email.
